The Problem

HELP! Our School's waste is getting Growing and Growing. The council has just informed the community that they cannot collect our rubbish until we tackle this issue.

The school community believes that our school is not doing its part in creating a sustainable and eco-conscious school, and it is your job (year 5's) to fix that!

The teachers have noticed that during fruit-break all of our scraps are being placed into the regular landfill rather than being correctly composted.

Your Job as food waste experts is to research, create and develops different a composting strategy which can be implemented throughout the school in order to help fight the school food waste problem. Good Luck!!

But first, let's learn about composting...

Composting 101

What is Composting?

Composting is the practice of the breaking down of organic waste using oxygen, which is then utilised for gardening or farming as a fertiliser (Bay Area Recycling for Charities, 2019).

Why is Composting important?

There are many reasons:

- Reduces the presence of organic waste in landfill, which helps to stop the presence of methane and other greenhouse gases from entering into the atmosphere (Bay Area Recycling for Charities, 2019).

- The by-products of composting are used as a natural fertiliser, which can promote plant growth (Bay Area Recycling for Charities, 2019).
