Introduction to: Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Classroom

Personal Reflection:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition that affects how a person may think, feel and interact in different environments (Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect), n.d.). Autism Spectrum Disorder is a non-linear condition, meaning how it affects one person can be very different for another. This is why autism is described as a “spectrum” (Aspect, n.d. n.p.). Additionally, Autism affects people in different environments, which may include certain physical or social environments, as well as the five senses.

Autism Spectrum Disorder needs to be considered from the context of education. Different educational environments including the inside of the classroom, outside the classroom, in the yard and working with other students may require additional support for students with ASD.

Furthermore, given the individualised nature of ASD, I thought it could be beneficial to base my learning plan on a specific cohort that I have observed on my previous placements. I hope that having a plan that is based on a cohort with whom I am familiar can guide my research specific to their learning needs in a classroom environment.

Creating this prototype will hopefully support my learning as a pre-service teacher, as well as my educating performance as I will hopefully have a deeper awareness and aptitude to support students who have Autism Spectrum Disorder in the classroom. Finally, the motive of this research is to create a “strengths-based prototype” that addresses the educational needs and implications of child

Furthermore, Autism Spectrum Disorder must be viewed from the perspective of a  “strengths-based approach” that supports children in ways that celebrate their strengths and find ways to assists challenges (Department of Education, 2012).
